Grape variety: 85% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah
Tasting: Wine of intense red purple colour. The nose is intense and persistent, with calls of violet and very ripe red fruits: strawberries, cherries and plums. The succession of perfumes is accompanied with notes of jam and spices: liquorice, black pepper, cloves and pinch of vanilla. In the palate the wine has a soft attack and velvety, is hot in body and with good acidity. The tannins are getting rounder by the time. The aftertaste reveals sweet notes of vanilla. To serve at 16-18°C. There is a good marriage with “robust” dishes: steaks, red meat, roasted, legume soup, game birds.
Curiosity: father of all great Tuscan, Sangiovese reigns also low in Tuscany. The local name, Morellino, dates back to the Middle Ages. The etymology of the name may be made or from Morello as the horses that towed carriages or from Moro, the dark colour which characterises the berry, like the Brunello for the bruno (brown) of Sangiovese in DOCG. To make singular this Sangiovese di Scansano is the fact that is untouched by other vines from more than 150 years. The only inclusion from abroad can be the Alicante in 1700. |
